Common questions about LTL

What is the main purpose of a bill of lading?

A BOL, or bill of lading, is a document that serves as a contract between shippers and carriers, a receipt for services, and a document of title. The bill of lading contains all the information necessary for the carrier and driver to execute the freight shipment and invoice it correctly and should be provided to the carrier upon pickup, as well as a copy attached to the shipment itself.

Who legally issues a bill of lading?

A BOL is often issued by your carrier, broker, or forwarder, and you just have to fill out the details in the blank form. A copy is given to the shipper and a copy is affixed to the shipment itself. The BOL includes all the information necessary to complete the shipment, including names and addresses of the shipper and consignee, a description of the freight, and any necessary accessorials.

Can bill of lading be issued before shipment?

The bill of lading is issued by the carrier based on the information provided by the shipper at the time of the quote. Once issued, the shipper gets a copy, and a copy is affixed to the shipment itself.
