The easiest way to ensure you correctly classify your LTL freight is to obtain a subscription to CLASSIT, the online freight classification directory tool maintained by the NMFTA.
LTL cargo is typically handled, loaded, unloaded, and reorganized multiple times at different freight terminals while in transit, so it is critical to have the proper packaging, labeling, and paperwork so no issues arise that may delay delivery.
More durable items can be shipped in standard corrugated cardboard boxes. For the most protection, make sure the boxes are new or have retained their sturdiness, avoid loose space inside the boxes, secure well with packing tape, and label them clearly.
All shipments require a Bill of Lading. BOLs must be issued for goods to travel from Point A to Point B.
A letter from the shipper should be prepared detailing that the bill of lading was lost. The carrier will typically need a letter of indemnity from the shipper, which releases the carrier from liability.
