Common questions about LTL

What does class mean when shipping LTL?

LTL freight classes represent a standardized method of classification for LTL freight based on the ease of movement. Ranking and classes are defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA).

What is average damage rate for LTL shipping?

Freight damage should always be far less than 1% of total shipments. If freight damage is over 1%, there is something wrong with the packaging, loading/unloading process or the carrier.

Why does LTL freight shipping vary?

LTL rates are determined by a variety of factors, and every LTL carrier is different. While freight class provides a standardized system of LTL freight classification, many other factors go into determining a freight rate, including weight and density, the route, the origin and destination, special instructions, and the carrier selected.
